second base
one of the four bases on the diamond-shaped field that runners must touch in sequence to score a run
Second base is one of the four bases on a baseball or softball field, positioned between first base and third base. It is located in the middle of the infield and is the second station that a player must reach when running the bases. After hitting the ball and reaching first base, a player must advance to second base before moving to third base and then home plate to score a run. Second base is also a key area for defensive plays, where fielders often try to tag out runners attempting to advance or get to the base. It plays an important role in both offense and defense.
